Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... For Now.
Vince Gilligan did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit program reaching its finale—and the next chapter already in development—the writers' room recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Incredible Fan Response
It would be easy to get distracted by the constant speculation and online debates regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's intentional. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by online forums.”
“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Does the creator Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Considering the creative staff are not listening by fan response, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… in a way.
“We have some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” he states. “yet we stand ready to discard a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, one could always use the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
