Two Separate Cuba-bound Humanitarian Ships Declared Unaccounted For after Departing Mexican Waters.
A large-scale search and recovery mission is presently in progress in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of unlocated sailboats loaded with relief goods traveling from the Mexican coast to Havana.
Military Rescue Efforts Launched
Authorities in Mexico has deployed navy personnel and military search aircraft to search for the missing boats, which were carrying no fewer than 9 sailors, per a military release.
The ships had been projected to arrive in Havana on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no confirmation of their docking, authorities reported.
Background of Aid to the Nation
The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the nation endures multiple national electricity failures.
"The skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and each boat are equipped with suitable safety equipment and communication devices," an official associated with the mission said.
The nine crew members are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.
"Our team is working closely with the authorities and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to make it to Cuba without incident," the spokesperson added.
Recent Aid Shipment
Just days before, the government in Havana widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had carried 14 tons of donated goods to the island.
That ship, dubbed "a new Granma" in reference to the vessel in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to start the armed struggle in the 1950s, delivered photovoltaic panels, medicines, infant formula, bicycles and foodstuffs.
Larger Geopolitical Climate
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded initiatives to deliver critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a oil sanctions on the island nation began.
The United Nations have since warned of ""critical" shortages of supplies, with over 50k operations cancelled in Cuba because of energy rationing.
Diplomatic tensions have increased lately, with comments from various leaders highlighting the complex situation regarding diplomatic ties.
Reacting to certain comments, a prominent Cuban official declared that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Reports suggest that preliminary steps of talks commenced, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.
The naval forces said it was dedicated to using every available asset at its reach to find the vessels and secure the well-being of the crews.
To date, there has been no official comment on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban government.
