Our team is analyzing images and video posted this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is under way.
Our starting point to verify the site of where the pictures originated was based on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified where the footage were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
