During a clear message to Western nations, Leader Vladimir Putin stated to PM Narendra Modi that Russia is prepared to provide “uninterrupted” deliveries of crude oil to India. The announcement came when Putin and Modi met in Delhi and affirmed their relationship were “resistant to foreign coercion.”
A Signal Directed at the United States
Putin's comments, made on Friday, appeared to be a pointed rebuke at Washington, which have repeatedly attempted to pressure New Delhi into scaling back its close relations with Moscow. The context comes after previous US actions, including the imposition of import duties against Indian goods over its buying of discounted Russian crude.
“Russia is a reliable source of fuel and all required for the advancement of India’s energy sector,” Putin said. “We are ready to continue ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of fuel for the booming Indian economy.”
Modi, while not mentioning oil specifically, echoed the theme by saying that “secure fuel supplies has been a strong and important cornerstone of the India-Russia partnership.”
Questioning American Pressure
Before the summit, in a television interview, Putin had questioned American pressure on India's energy purchases. The president questioned, “Should America can claim the privilege to buy our atomic materials, why shouldn’t India enjoy the equivalent access?”
The visit represented his initial trip to India after the beginning of the situation in Ukraine, and the two nations undertook a deliberate effort to display that the bond between the heads of state was undisturbed.
An Unusual Reception
In a unusual step, Modi welcomed directly Putin upon his arrival. They embraced warmly like old friends before holding a closed-door supper together.
Modi in his statement called India's partnership with Russia as “a beacon” and noted it was “built on mutual respect and deep trust.”
Reaffirming Strategic Partnerships
The meeting produced a number of significant pacts regarding defence and trade relations. A major outcome was the signing of an economic cooperation programme aimed at 2030, which aims to double bilateral trade to a hundred billion USD per year by the end of the decade.
Furthermore agreed to reshape their strategic cooperation. Even as Russia remains India's biggest exporter of defence equipment, the volume has diminished lately as India has sought broaden its procurement.
