R360 Competition Athletes Face 10-Season Suspension from National Rugby League
The athlete gained 20 caps for the All Blacks before switching allegiance to Samoa.
Rugby league's authority has announced that players who sign with the “breakaway” R360 league will be prohibited for a decade.
The new league, scheduled to begin in 2026, is hoping to draw athletes from both codes with hefty contracts and a slimmed-down game calendar.
Top NRL athletes have reportedly received offers by the new league, which will include multiple men's clubs and four women's sides located in key urban centers globally.
The Samoan the player, who plays for New Zealand Warriors in the league, has stated he has had negotiations involving the new organization.
Papenhuyzen, Lomax, Payne Haas and Jye Gray are also said to be weighing up offers from the new competition.
Eight major rugby union countries, such as Australia, recently announced a restriction on R360 recruits appearing in international matches.
“We have consulted our teams and we've responded strongly,” stated the league's chairman Peter V'Landys.
“Sadly, there will always be organizations that attempt to hijack our sport for monetary profit.
“They avoid funding in development systems or the development of athletes. They simply exploit the dedication of others, jeopardizing careers of monetary damage while gaining personally.
“In truth, they represent, copying the game.”
The league is launched by ex-England star Tindall and supported by private investors.
Subsequent to the potential rugby union prohibitions were revealed earlier, it commented: “We seek to cooperate together as part of the global rugby calendar.
“The competition is structured with customized calendars for male and female sides and R360 will allow all athletes for international matches, as included in their deals.”
R360 will apply for endorsement for its initiatives from the international authority, rugby union's regulatory group, at its council meeting in the coming year.
