Citizens have come together around the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the war in Gaza.

The incident resulted in more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most lethal day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel answered by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are considered trustworthy by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"Our violent opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.

He also vowed to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the return of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer pose a danger to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The national leadership delayed state remembrance events until 16 October - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still took place across the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of people who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was conducted in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was observed throughout the country.

Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt

At the same time, both sides' representatives met in the Egyptian coastal city of the negotiation venue for a second day of indirect talks to discuss the provisions of the proposal.

A high-ranking delegate familiar with the negotiations said that an late session of negotiations began at evening in Egypt.

The source stated the earlier meeting ended without tangible results, due to disagreements over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not recommence fighting after the first phase of the arrangement.

He commented that the discussions are "difficult and have not yet achieve any significant progress," but pointed out that mediators are striving to close the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Key Issues in Discussions

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The trade of the captives still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Arrangements for humanitarian aid distribution
  • After-conflict administration of the region

Civilian Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, young Hagar - whose family member lived through the attack on the outdoor event, where many attendees were lost their lives and numerous more were abducted by Hamas fighters - told: "Nowhere feels like home any longer and until each abducted person come back none of us will be secure."

"Once we see all home returned, we can relax again. Then we can start to heal," she continued.

In front of the prime minister's home in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their support for the families of the captives. Israel states forty-eight remain in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.

Protester Atalia Regev explained: "We need do any agreement required for the abducted to be released. But we truly desire promises that we will be safe."

Opinion polls now regularly indicate that approximately 70% of the population want the war to conclude in exchange for the liberation of the abducted.

Palestinian Circumstances

At the location of Nova festival, mourners came together to honor the dead.

From the site, the noise of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people reported the severe Israeli attacks persisted.

In Gaza City, bombardments were documented in the morning of that day in the western district, area and locality neighbourhoods and in the eastern district of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

"As the dusk falls, the anxiety appears with it," relocated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli bombing previously, described.

"Me and my three children are afraid of the air strikes. All the night we are lying together, embracing, notably my smallest child who places his face on me the entire evening."

"Every second we look at the news to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be achieved and that the conflict will return to us."

Health Crisis

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City said it had received the bodies of six people by the afternoon, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Nasser hospital in the southern city of the city indicated two more dead people had been delivered. An individual was died by Israeli forces while looking for help to the southern area, medical staff said.

The region's health ministry announced twenty-five of the {territ
