British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the pastel suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including several ensembles for her US tour following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
