Arne Slot Maintains He Feels Secure and Retains Liverpool's Backing After PSV Defeat
Arne Slot conceded that it's understandable for doubts to be asked about his future following a further heavy defeat against the Dutch champions.
Liverpool endured their 9th loss in twelve games, marking the club's poorest run after being relegated in the 1953-54 season.
They were taken apart by the Dutch league champions on a difficult night at their home ground.
“I'm confident, I am OK, I've received a lot of support from the top,” Slot stated.
“It would be great to turn it around and secure a win of course but when you're working as a coach and underperforming then it is normal that questions are asked.”
He noted, “I accept my role. This isn't the first time I’ve been in a difficult position but it's necessary that we turned it around.”
Discussions with Liverpool Hierarchy
Upon being questioned to expand on his conversations with the club's leadership, Slot said:
“There's regular dialogue. They assist for the squad and for me and those talks happen but they don’t call me constantly of the day to say they have faith in me.”
He further stated, “Through standard discussions I sense the confidence. However I haven’t spoken to them since this game yet so let’s see.”
Persistent Failings and Player Reaction
Slot expressed regret over known weaknesses from his team in their European defeat, namely wasted chances and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, midfielder Curtis Jones was more forthright in his evaluation of the club’s predicament.
“I don’t have the answers. Frankly, I don’t. I'm telling that to everybody,” the midfielder stated.
“It’s just not good enough. I don't have to wait to consider it. I'm beyond getting mad internally. I've reached the stage now where I just don’t have the vocabulary.”
He added, “It's tough because I’m playing for the club I love. I support them, and I’ve seen this club all my life.”
“In recent memory, I've not seen a Liverpool team experiencing a phase like this with outcomes like these.”
Jones concluded, “However we continue to wear the crest on our shirts. And as long as it is removed, we will always compete.”
“We will attempt to bring this squad return to its rightful place, demonstrate to all again what Liverpool stands for and why it's known as the top club in the planet.”
“But right now, we're in trouble and it needs to change.”
